A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. – Luke 22:24-27
There is a paradox that runs through all of Jesus’ teaching: that the first will be last, and the last will be first. We as broken human beings look up to those with strength, status, and power. But, from his birth in a stable to his death on a cross, Jesus shows us a different way.
Our community art exhibit this fall will explore this theme, and in doing so we will be in line with our time in the Gospel of Luke, chapters 21:5–22:46. As always, there are many ways to explore this theme: whether it's exploring what service looks like, wrestling with how we as people try to gain prestige and power, or what it means that Jesus showed himself to be the suffering servant on the cross.
If you are a poet or painter; if you sketch, quilt, sculpt, or create any other form of visual or written art, we would invite you to share your work with us! This will be an informal show, on display in our lobby and auditorium for three weeks. If children or families wish to participate, they are also welcome to do so. There is no skill level required for participation—we simply want to receive our community's creative reflection on what it means to follow Jesus into service.
We will be hosting a reception for this art exhibition on Sunday, November 3rd (directly after the third service). All artists participating in the exhibit are encouraged to attend, and there will be space during this reception for some performing artists (musicians, poets, dramatists, etc) to share their work. Please let us know when you sign up if you would like to do so.
Submissions need to be brought to the church by Sunday, October 13th. If you would like to participate, will will need you to sign up here by October 6th.
