Jesus washes the disciples feet and serves them a meal that is all about his ultimate act of self-giving love, and the disciples are arguing about position. What strikes me is not how clueless the disciples are, but how much we are still like this. It is so easy for us to bring broken power dynamics into the heart of Jesus’ own family — the church. Driven by our own fears of scarcity and hunger for significance, we wake up and discover a desire to serve Jesus has become a drive towards selfish ambition. In the midst of all of this stands Jesus, quietly but firmly showing us through word and action a better way. Prising apart our clenched, compulsive fists, he says, “you are not to be like that.” (Luke 22:26b)
