Matthew 6:9–13
Our Father

The context for Jesus’ teaching is best understood from its recording in Luke 11. At some point, it would seem that the disciples were either listening, or trying to join Jesus as He prayed. When Jesus had finished praying, the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. And so to teach them how to pray, Jesus recites for the very first time what has come to be known as the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer was not meant to be mindlessly recited — rather, it was a gift given to Christians that asks for revelation, prophetic utterance, and is very evangelistic.
